BBC 6 Minute English: Can climate change affect our mental health?

resilient

She says that research has found that people who have a strong community are more resilient when bad things, like natural disasters, happen.
  • able to recover quickly from difficulties, or able to return to original shape after being bent or stretched
  • Someone who is resilient can cope with stress or trauma and recover quickly.
  • Even after losing her job, she remained resilient and started her own business.
  • Children are often more resilient than we think.
  • A resilient material returns to its original shape after being bent or compressed.
  • Rubber is a resilient material.
  • For example, studies show that people who have strong community connections are more resilient when facing challenges like natural disasters. They recover faster and feel less isolated.
  • According to research, people with strong social ties tend to be more resilient in difficult situations. For instance, when natural disasters occur, those in tight-knit communities often receive support from neighbors, which helps them recover both emotionally and practically.
silver lining:

The silver lining in all this — I mean, if it wasn't for the Tubbs fire, we wouldn't be working as a community right now to build a new community plaza. We were a close community before the Tubbs, but afterwards we are so much stronger and resilient. And I think our children are as well. They can jump over any hurdle.
  •  a positive or hopeful aspect of an otherwise negative situation

Every cloud has a silver lining.

  •  I lost my job, but the silver lining is that I finally have time to start my own business.
  • One silver lining of the COVID-19 pandemic is that more people started valuing mental health and flexible work schedules.
  • I live in China, where freedom of speech is limited and many aspects of life are controlled by the government. However, I try to find a silver lining by focusing on personal growth and helping others in small ways.
  • Although I live in a country where freedom is restricted, the silver lining is that it pushes me to think more critically, value truth, and find ways to make a difference through education and dialogue.
  • I live in a country where freedom of speech and access to information are limited. At times, this feels frustrating, especially when I want to explore different perspectives or express my thoughts openly. However, the silver lining is that this environment has made me more thoughtful and resilient. I’ve learned to think critically, to read between the lines, and to value truth even more. Instead of complaining, I try to help others around me become more aware and open-minded. This experience has made me stronger and more committed to personal growth.
